Tip of the Week – Finding Your Purpose At Work

Having a sense of purpose at work is important for our well-being. Finding your purpose at work is important. When there is a sense of purpose at work, passion, innovation and commitment towards your job will follow naturally. How does one know if they have a purpose mindset or a career mindset?

When you have a purpose mindset, you are focused on serving the organization, and your professional purpose is balanced with your personal purpose. But when you have a career mindset, you are focused on advancing your career and prioritizing an increase in salary, power or teammates. If you spend more than 50% of your time with a career mindset, you might end up dissatisfied with your work!

Everyone deserves a career where they have a sense of purpose, but only you can define it. Here are a few tips on finding your purpose at work:

Know What Fuels You

When you know what the things that matter most to you are, you will be able to pinpoint activities or behaviours that genuinely matter. Breathe life into your work by injecting it with a sense of purpose. If you value connection, find purpose at work by openly connecting and sharing with your colleagues about your life – within reason! If you value contribution, you can go above what your client expects or give back to the community through volunteering. Remember that it is not your boss or your company’s responsibility to create a purpose for you at work. You have to be the one to know your purpose and what fuels you.

Recall Your Unique Talents

Sometimes you get too focused on finding your purpose at work that you forget about you! Perhaps your talent is being organized, which provides structure for you and your colleagues to finish tasks efficiently. Or it could be your sense of humor that brightens the days of the people around you. Remembering the unique talent you have plays a big role in feeling that you have a purpose at work.

Purpose Beyond Your Work

You might be struggling to think of your purpose at work. If so, think about what you have going for you beyond the office walls. Perhaps you take part in volunteer activities to give back to the community. Or you could be a really good athlete partaking in multiple sports. Reflect on how these activities bring you fulfillment. Through reflection, you might just be able to find a way to achieve the same level of fulfillment at work.

Ultimately, you have to be aware of the power you hold when it comes to shaping your purpose, knowing your talent and impacting the people around you. As Abraham Lincoln said, “You can have anything you want if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.”
