Failure is a reality of life and can help us grow. Yet, everyone hates to fail because of the pain and shame associated with it! Often, success comes after multiple failures. Walt Disney was fired from his job because his editor felt that he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. The rest, as they say, is history. Here’s what the man himself had to say about his failures:, “You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”
Failure cannot be avoided. What’s important is our will to handle it well instead of letting it lead us down a vicious cycle of negativity. Here are a few tips on how to deal with failure in a healthy way:
Accept Your Emotions
Failure is bound to hurt. Instead of distracting yourself or pushing the pain away, embrace and reflect on it. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Behavioural Decision Making revealed that it is more helpful to think about your emotions linked to a failure, rather than the failure itself. Allow yourself to feel bad – acknowledge how you feel! These emotions can eventually push you to work harder to find a better solution in the future.
Learn From it
Failure can be a great ‘teacher’. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you experience failure – Why did I fail? What could I have done for a better outcome? Was the failure out of my control? Reflect on what you have learned from the experience and how you can apply the lessons in future situations. Don’t rush this process! Some answers may not come immediately and may even take hours, days, maybe even a week. If you are unable to find an answer to your questions, try asking for feedback from your colleagues, boss or even your social circle. Most importantly, remember to not see failure as a burden weighing you down, but as stepping stone towards your goal.
Just Keep Moving Forward
Going over the failure in your head repeatedly will not change the outcome. It will only intensify your emotions and prevent you from moving forward. Remember, you cannot change the past but you can shape your future! After learning from your mistakes, write out a rough plan on how you can move forward from there. The quicker you take the step forward, the faster you can leave those negative thoughts behind!
Most successful people will tell you that their achievements came with many mistakes. Remember to not give up! Failure will eventually lead to success if you learn from it.
